Scholarships by Location

Regional, state, and local colleges and organizations offer a wide range of scholarships for students in most every major field of study.

State and Regional Scholarships Can Make a Difference

State, regional, and local scholarship programs often provide students with focused, exceptional opportunities to help pay for their education--no matter their field of study. National scholarship programs attract the greatest number of applicants. You may also be surprised by the number of available scholarships in your state, county, or community.

Scholarship or grant programs at the state or local levels are often grouped by the major; however, some scholarships are coupled with requirements based on income, gender, ethnic background, or spiritual association. Restrictions may actually work to your advantage, further narrowing the competition and directly reflecting who you are and what you intend to do with your degree.

Looking for Nearby Scholarships

Start your financial aid search at the colleges and universities where you have applied (or intend to apply) for admissions. If you're currently attending a school, check with the financial aid office because they usually have extensive lists of available scholarships.

Search the sites of large corporations located in your state or city; many of them offer scholarships that are only for community members. You can also find plenty of books at the library that list scholarships by state. Use the Web to search by state or academic specialization. The College Board offers free searches among more than 2,000 sources offering up to $3 billion in aid.

Depending on your locale, you should be able to find scholarships for just about any intended major or program of study.

Applying for Aid

Read the scholarship details before applying to ensure that you match the financial need, academic field, age, ethnicity, gender, or location requirements. Submit your application with all pertinent supporting documents (like transcripts, test scores, or recommendation letters).

The diversity among award organizations is astonishing. Here are a few organizations offering scholarships at state or local levels:

  • ACLU Stand Up for Freedom
  • Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation
  • Air and Waste Management Association
  • Boys and Girls Clubs
  • David Letterman Foundation
  • Maui County Bar Association
  • Kern County Women Lawyers Foundation
  • Swiss Benevolent Society of New York
  • The Rosa L. Parks Scholarship Foundation
  • The Vegetarian Resource Group

Organization and perseverance are your best assets in your scholarship search. Keep track of where you've applied and what materials are required. The more scholarship applications you complete, the greater the odds that you'll receive one.
