Scholarships
The best kind of money for college is free money--but you still have to earn it. There are many hundreds of scholarship programs throughout the U.S. for just about every kind of student. The most common types of scholarships are categorized by:
- Program. These scholarships are awarded to promising students who seek to study a specific subject, from art to zoology. To earn the scholarship, you may have to compete with other students, display a certain amount of related experience, and/or commit to studying the topic in question. If you switch majors, you might lose your funding, so if you seek a subject-specific scholarship, be sure it's what you want to do.
- Location. Nearly all U.S. states, as well as many counties, cities and regional areas, offer scholarships for academically qualified students. These awards often have residency requirements. Either you must have lived in the area for a certain number of years before applying for the scholarship, or--less frequently--you must commit to returning to the area and contributing to the community in some way after graduation. If you should fail to fulfill that obligation, you may be required to repay the scholarship as you would a loan.
- Culture or Ethnicity. Due to America's long history of racial, cultural and gender inequality, there are many scholarships available for women and ethnic minorities, as well as members of particular religious communities. As with most scholarships, they also require proof of academic achievement.
In many cases, the above criteria are combined to meet a particular need or academic gap; for example, there are many scholarships available for women and minorities to study science and engineering, where they are underrepresented. CollegeAid.com's scholarship search enables you to search for scholarships by several criteria, and build a customized list of those you wish to apply for.
